Cornwall: Where My Photography and Stories Begin

There are places that you visit, and there are places that become part of who you are.

For me, Cornwall is the latter.

I’ve been visiting Cornwall for many years, camera in hand, drawn back time and again by its dramatic coastline, picturesque fishing villages, rolling countryside, and ever-changing light. No matter how many times I return, I always discover something new. A hidden cove. A forgotten pathway. A different mood created by the weather. Cornwall never stands still, and that’s part of its magic.

As a landscape photographer, Cornwall offers endless inspiration. The rugged cliffs of the north coast, the tranquil harbours of the south, and the vast Atlantic skies provide opportunities for photographs in every season. I’ve spent countless mornings standing on windswept headlands waiting for sunrise and many evenings watching the last golden light disappear behind the horizon.

But Cornwall inspires more than my photography.

It inspires my writing too.

People often assume that photography and novel writing are completely different creative pursuits. One captures a single moment; the other unfolds over hundreds of pages. Yet for me, they are closely connected.

Whenever I photograph a landscape, I find myself wondering about the stories hidden within it.

Who stood here before me?

Who walked along this path fifty years ago?

What conversations took place overlooking this harbour?

What memories are tied to this beach?

A photograph may freeze a moment in time, but a story allows that moment to breathe.

Many of my novels begin with a location. A place sparks a question, and that question becomes a story.

Cornwall is particularly powerful in this regard because it feels timeless. There are places where the modern world seems to fade away, leaving behind only the sea, the sky, and the stories carried by the wind. Walking along the South West Coast Path, it’s easy to imagine lives unfolding across generations. Every harbour wall, every abandoned engine house, every weathered fishing boat seems to hold a piece of history.

As a photographer, I’m always searching for light.

As a writer, I’m always searching for emotion.

Interestingly, the two often lead me to the same places.

The soft glow of dawn over a Cornish bay can evoke feelings of hope and possibility. A storm rolling in from the Atlantic can create tension and uncertainty. The last light of the day can feel nostalgic, reflective, even bittersweet. These moods don’t just influence my photographs; they influence my characters and stories as well.

When I review my images after a trip, I often find myself revisiting those emotions. Sometimes a single photograph can trigger an idea for a scene. Occasionally it sparks an entire storyline.

Photography teaches you to observe.

Writing teaches you to imagine.

Together, they encourage you to look beyond what is immediately visible.

Cornwall has taught me both lessons.

It has taught me to slow down and notice details: the texture of weathered stone, the movement of waves against the shore, the changing colours of the sea. It has also encouraged me to ask questions and imagine the lives that might have unfolded in these remarkable places.

Whether I’m standing behind a camera or sitting at my desk writing, Cornwall remains one of my greatest sources of inspiration.

It’s a place I never tire of visiting, photographing, or writing about.

And perhaps that’s because Cornwall isn’t simply a destination.

It’s a collection of stories waiting to be discovered.

The next time you look at a landscape photograph, I encourage you to pause for a moment and ask yourself a simple question:

What story can you see?

You might be surprised by the answer.
