There are some stories that arrive quietly. They don’t explode onto the page with noise and drama. Instead, they slip into your heart slowly, like the sound of the sea outside a bedroom window or the memory of a summer you never wanted to end.
That’s exactly what inspired my new novel, The Galway Girl.
Set in the summer of 1986, the story follows fifteen-year-old Tom Carter, a London teenager dragged to Galway on a family holiday he’s convinced will be painfully boring. Armed with nothing more than a notebook, a battered old camera gifted to him by his grandfather, and a soundtrack of 80s music in his Walkman, Tom arrives in Ireland expecting rain, awkward family moments, and endless boredom.
Instead, he finds something — and someone — that changes everything.
From the windswept beauty of Salthill Prom to the warmth of crowded kitchens and Atlantic sunsets, The Galway Girl is a coming-of-age romance about first love, memory, photography, and learning that life is made up of moments worth holding onto.
At its heart, this is a story about seeing the world differently.
As Tom discovers:
“That was what the viewfinder did, he supposed. It made the world small enough to keep.”
And perhaps my favourite line from the book:
“Some places stay with you.”
Galway becomes more than just a setting. It becomes part of the story itself — alive with music, sea air, summer light, and the bittersweet feeling of knowing that some moments can never last forever.
Early readers have described the novel as:
“Beautifully written… funny, quirky, and full of the innocence of young love blossoming.”
and
“The kind of book that creeps up on you, wraps itself around your heart, and refuses to let go.”
Another reviewer wrote:
“Everything was described in such depth, now putting Galway on my destination list for the future.”
That means the world to me because atmosphere and emotion were at the centre of everything I wanted this book to be.
