About Me

I’m Steve McCarthy, a contemporary fiction author based in Wiltshire, though I’m often found chasing the light along Cornwall’s north coast. I’ve always been fascinated by stories—especially the quiet, everyday moments that can change the direction of a life.

In my novels, I write warm, hopeful and heartfelt stories about time, second chances and the lives we almost lived. I’m drawn to the idea that a single moment—a missed train, a delayed decision, a chance encounter—can ripple through a life in ways we could never have predicted. Those small turning points, the ones that seem insignificant at the time, often become the moments that shape who we become.

Much of what I write is rooted in that sense of possibility. I’m interested in the paths we choose, the ones we leave behind, and the fragile threads that connect people across time and circumstance. My stories focus on ordinary lives and recognisable emotions—love, regret, hope, memory and the quiet courage it takes to begin again.

I’m particularly drawn to characters standing at crossroads in their lives, wondering how things might have been different if just one moment had gone another way. Through contemporary fiction, I try to explore those “what if” questions with warmth, honesty and a touch of humour.

Alongside writing, I’m also a photographer and podcaster, but storytelling is at the heart of everything I do. Whether through words, images or conversations, I’m always looking for the moments that reveal something true about who we are and the lives we’re trying to build.
